Formed on Nov. 4, 1920, as the Votsk Autonomous Oblast; renamed Udmurt Autonomous Oblast in 1932; converted to an autonomous republic on Dec. 28, 1934. Situated in the Cis-Ural Region, between the Kama and Viatka rivers. Area, 42,100 sq km. Population, 1,463,000 (as of Jan. 1,1976).
