Apies Irmağının her iki yakasında yer alan kent doğuda Magalies Dağının batı eteklerine kadar uzanır. Yüzölçümü 1.644 km²'dir.
Adını aldığı Boer devlet adamı Andries Pretorius'un oğlu Marthinus Pretorius tarafından 1855'te kuruldu. 1860'ta Transvaal'ın merkezi, 1910'da da Güney Afrika'nın idari başkenti oldu. 1931'de kent statüsü kazandı.
