Khmer Krallığının başkenti ve gücünün simgesi olan Angor Vat, Vişnu adına bir Hindu tapınağı iken 13. yüzyılda bir Budist tapınağına çevrildi.
Yapı, günümüze dek oldukça iyi bir korunma altında ulaşabilmiştir ve kuzeyindeki Angkor Thom antik şehri ile birlikte 1992 yılında Dünya Kültür Mirası Listesi'ne girmiştir.
