Yakın tarihte başta Kosova olmak üzere, Avrupa, Afrika, Orta Doğu ve Uzak Doğu Asya'da birçok sorunun çözümü sürecinde üstlendiği arabuluculuk görevinden ötürü 2008 Nobel Barış Ödülüne layık görüldü.
Ahtisaari, 16 Ekim 2023'te sağlık sorunları nedeniyle 86 yaşında vefat etti.
