Beyaz Rusya’nın Polonya sınırında yer alan Brest şehri, Bug ve Mukhavets nehirlerinin birleştiği yerdedir.
Tarih boyunca pek çok kültüre ev sahipliği yapmış olan Brest’te ünlü Brest-Litovsk anlaşması da imzalanmıştır. Şehrin kalesi, Sovyetler Birliği tarafından özel bir ödül olan Kahraman Kalesi olarak tanınmıştır.
Orta Çağ döneminde, 10. yüzyıldan 1319’a kadar Polonya Krallığı hakimiyetinde olan şehir, 1795 yılında Rus İmparatorluğu’na dâhil olmuştur. Her ne kadar I. Dünya Savaşı’nda Polonya egemenliğine geçmiş olsa da, II. Dünya Savaşı döneminde Sovyetlerin, 1941’de ise Nazilerin hâkimiyetine girmiştir. Savaştan sonra Sovyetler Birliği’nin Polonya ile yeni sınırlarını belirlemesi üzerine şehir, Sovyetler’e dâhil olmuştur. 1991’de ise Beyaz Rusya egemenliğine girmiştir.
