İlk olarak Ağustos 1987'de Başkan Ronald Reagan tarafından Federal Rezerv başkanı olarak atandı. Bulunduğu pozisyonda en uzun süre görev yapan ikinci kişi olduktan sonra 31 Ocak 2006'da emekli olana kadar art arda dört yıllık aralıklarla yeniden atandı.
