Binası, Neubau’da 1889 yılında Alman Tiyatrolar Birliği tarafından mimar Ferdinand Fellner’e yaptırılmıştır. Devlet Tiyatrosu sanılsa da aslında özel bir firma tarafından yönetilmektedir. 14 Eylül 1889'da Ludwig Anzengrubers’in oyunu Der Fleck auf der Ehr ile açılışı yapılmıştır.
