Tate Britain Londra'da Thames Nehri yakınlarında Londra metrosunun «Pimlico» istasyonu yanında «Millbank» mevkiinde ve 2000'de Tate Modern sanat galerisi açılan kadar Britanya asıllı ve modern sanat galerisi olarak kullanılmış bir binada konumlanmıştır.
«Tate» Müzeler Kurumunin en eski kısmı olup 1897'de «Britanya Güzel Sanatlari Millî Galerisi (National Gallery of British Art)» adıyla açılmıştır ve sonradan bu galerinin hamii olan Sır Henry Tate anısına «Tate Galerisi» olarak isimlendirilmiştir.
Ünlü Britanyalı ressam olan J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) tarafından ülkeye miras bırakılan eserleri sergilemesi dolayısıyla çok ün kazanmıştır.
