Plastiklerle ilgili çalışmaları sebebiyle 1953 yılında Nobel Kimya Ödülü'nü almış olan Alman kimyager. 1903 yılında Halle Üniversitesi'nde doktorasını tamamladı. 1926 yılında Freiburg Üniversitesi'nde profesör oldu.
