Tiren Denizi kıyısında yer alan antik bir Magna Graecia kentidir. Fokaia'dan gelen Yunanlar tarafından M.Ö. 538-535 yıllarında Hyele adı ile kurulmuştur. Adı daha sonra Elegona, sonra Elea'ya dönmüştür ve Roma döneminde günümüzdeki Latin ve İtalyan adıyla tanınmıştır. 1998 yılında Dünya Mirası olarak ilan edilmiştir.
