Katedral, Gürcü bölgelerini bir krallık haline getiren Kral Üçüncü Bagrat’ın hükümdarlığı sırasında, yani 11. yüzyılda inşa edilmiştir.
Kilise, Rioni Nehri’nin yüksek ve kayalık kıyısında yer alıyor. 17. yüzyılda Osmanlı savaşları sırasında Türk toplarından birkaçı katedrale isabet edince uzun süre harap hâlde bırakılmış.
1994’te UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi’ne girmeyi başardı fakat 2009 ve 2012’de yapılan restorasyonlarla listedeki yeri biraz tehlikeye girdi.
