Avusturya doğumlu tiyatro ve film yönetmeni, yönetici ve tiyatro yapımcısıydı. Yenilikçi sahne prodüksiyonları ile 20. yüzyılın başlarında Alman dili tiyatrosunun en önde gelen yönetmenlerinden biri olarak kabul edilir. 1920'de Hugo von Hofmannsthal'ın Jedermann'ının performansıyla Salzburg Festivali'ni kurdu.
