Orta sahanın ortasında, güçlü şut kabiliyeti ve fiziksel gücünün yanı sıra tartışmalı bir karakteri vardı. Sadece Almanya Bundesliga liginde 109 sarı kart görmüş ve futbolu bırakana kadar ki en yüksek sarı kart sayısına sahip futbolcu unvanını bulundurmuştu.
Çok hırslı yapısı nedeniyle maç içerisinde çok agresif olmuştur. Ancak bu yapısı onu oynadığı dönemde Avrupa'nın sayılı orta saha oyuncularından biri olmasına da yardım etmiştir.
