New Mexico 4 ana bölgeye ayrılabilir: Great Plains (Büyük Düzlükler), Rocky Dağları, Colorado Platosu ile Basin-Range Bölgesi. İngilizce ve İspanyolca eyaletin resmi dilleridir. New Mexico'nun iklimi kuru ve sıcaktır. Su havzalarının karaya oranının en az olduğu eyalette içme suyu havzaları yapay göletlerden oluşur. Nüfus yoğunluğunun çok az olduğu eyaletlerden biridir.
