Genel olarak folk rock terimi 1960'ların ortasında Birleşik Krallık ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde ortaya çıkan bir türü tanımlamak için ortaya atılmıştır. Türün öncülüğünü Los Angeleslı müzik grubu The Byrds yapmıştır.
