Bağımsız ve özgün filmleriyle tanınan yönetmen, «Clerks» adlı ilk filminin 1994'te Amerikan bağımsızlarının kalesi Sundance Film Festivalinden ödülle dönmesiyle sinema dünyasına hızlı bir giriş yaptı.
Birçok kez Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Lee gibi oyunculerle çalışmıştır. Aynı zamanda büyük bir çizgi roman hayranı olan Smith, mizah dergilerine yazılar ve «Jay and Silent Bob» öyküleri de yazmıştır.
