Построена как часть королевского дворца на острове Сите, служила также домовой церковью.
Двухъярусная постройка в стиле лучистой готики состоит из нижней 3-нефной капеллы Девы Марии, перекрытой низкими крестовыми сводами, и контрастирующей с её полумраком верхней капеллы.
Главным украшением верхней капеллы являются витражи. Их площадь составляет 600 м², и две трети из них — подлинные произведения витражного искусства XIII века. Сюжеты витражей взяты из Ветхого и Нового Завета.
Архитектура, скульптура и витражи Сент-Шапель сильно пострадали во время Французской революции XVIII века (реликвии и убранство вынесли из церкви, которая была преобразована в архив). В ходе реставрации 1837 года была воссоздана скульптура верхнего и нижнего порталов, деревянный шпиль XV века заменён копией.
В составе сооружений вдоль набережной Сены в Париже Сент-Шапель включена в список Всемирного наследия.
