Музей демонстрирует традиционную румынскую деревенскую жизнь. Площадь музея составляет более 100 000 м2 и содержит 123 подлинных крестьянских поселения, 363 памятника и более 50 000 артефактов со всей Румынии. Сооружения в музее были построены в период с 17 по 20 век и представляют различные этнографические регионы, включая Банат, Трансильванию, Молдавию, Марамуреш, Олтению, Добруджу, Мунтению.
