Projenin ilk aşaması şehir merkezini Nnamdi Azikiwe Uluslararası Havalimanı'na bağlamakta ve Idu'daki Abuja-Kaduna Demiryolu istasyonunda durmaktadır. Abuja Metro Hattı 12 Temmuz 2018'de hizmete açılıp ertesi haftasında günde üç trenle yolculara hizmet vermeye başlamıştır. Hattaki yolcu hizmetleri COVID-19 salgını nedeniyle 2020 yılının başlarında geçici süreyle kapatıldı ve 29 Mayıs 2024'te yeniden açıldı.
