Kent St. John Nehri ve Fundy Körfezi’nin kıyısına kurulmuştur. 1785 yılında St. John ismiyle anonim olarak kurulan şehrin nüfusu ise metropolde 75.000, banliyölerle birlikte 125.000’dir.
Saint John sık sık «Kanada’nın İrlandalı Şehri» olarak anılmaktadır. 1867’den sonra ki göç dönemlerinde 150.000’den fazla İrlandalı St.John’a gelmiş ve bu durum şehrin kültürel yapısını büyük ölçüde etkilemiştir.
