Zanzibar'ın başkenti, tarihi ve turistik bölgesidir. Şehir geçen yüzyıla kadar dünya köle ticaretinin merkezi olması ile ünlüdür. 16 Şubat 2006 tarihinde BM tarafından koruma altına alınan şehir, Queen'in solisti Freddie Mercury’nin doğduğu yerdir. 2000 yılında UNESCO tarafından Dünya Mirası olarak duyurulmuştur.
