Antik Yunanistan'da tıp tanrısı Asklepios adına kutsanmış şifa tapınağıydı. Bu tapınaklar, hastaların ister tedavi ister bir çeşit şifa olsun, ister ruhsal ister fiziksel olsun, ziyaret edeceği bir yerdi. Asklepion adını Sağlık Tanrısı Asklepios’tan almıştır.
