Музей был создан по первоначальному завещанию Марион Куглер Макней, в состав которого входила большая часть ее состояния, ее важная коллекция произведений искусства и 24-комнатный особняк в стиле испанского колониального возрождения, расположенный на 23 акрах земли, озелененной фонтанами, широкими лужайками, садом в японском стиле и прудом с рыбками.
