The park was officially opened in 1889 by Governor Cecil Clementi Smith. Originally envisioned as a garden with tropical plants, it evolved into a botanical garden over time. In 1975, after Malaysia gained independence, it was renamed Perdana Lake Gardens by Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak.
