• One of the main attractions in the picturesque nature of Crete is the Samaria Gorge, sometimes called the 'Gran Canyon of Europe'.
  • Samaria Gorge Φαράγγι Σαμαριάς is in the Chania region in the west of Crete, in the mountains known as Lefka Ori.
  • The Samaria Gorge is in west Crete in the White Mountains range. It is the longest gorge in Europe, with a length of 18 kilometres.
  • There are many smaller gorges vertical to Samaria Gorge, some of which have never been crossed by humans and require canyoning equipment.
  • The small village of Samaria used to stand right in the heart of the gorge; however, it was abandoned by all its inhabitants in 1962 for the creation of the national park.
  • The gorge will also be closed on rainy days (when there is a danger of rock falls). In winter, high water makes the gorge of Samaria dangerous and impassable.
  • The northern Samaria Gorge Entrance is at an altitude of 1,227 meters on the plateau Omalos (the distance from Chania to Samaria Gorge is 40 km).
