    В западной литературе севернокитайский обычно называют мандарин, или мандаринский китайский (англ. Mandarin Chinese). Название возникло как калька c китайского гуаньхуа — «речь мандаринов».
    В России, говоря «китайский язык», как правило, имеют в виду именно его северную разновидность либо стандартную форму — путунхуа (создана в КНР на основе пекинского диалекта в 50—60 годы XX века).
