An affiliate of Lomonosov Moscow State University in Ulyanovsk, based on the traditions of classical education, was established by a resolution of the USSR Government in February 1988. In 1996, Ulyanovsk affiliate of MSU was reorganized into Ulyanovsk State University (USU). At present USU is one of the largest higher educational institutions in the Volga region, which comprises 6 institutes, 7 independent faculties, 2 affiliates, 6 learning centers.
