The Great Synagogue in Babrujsk, a Belarusian city in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz, was built in 1900/01. Before 1941 the proportion of the Jewish population in Babruysk was between 25 and 30%. With over 30 synagogues, Bobrujsk was an important center of Jewish culture, so it was ironically popularly called the capital of Israel (Stalitsa Yisrael).
