South Korea is an East Asian state on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. To its north sits North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), which declared its independence in September 1948. To the west, across the Yellow Sea, lies China and to the south and east, across the Korea Strait (Tsushima Strait) and East Sea (Sea of Japan), is Japan.
