From 1712 to March 1918 the city was the capital of Russia. Since 2008, the city became the second capital, when the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation moved here. Until the early 1720s, the main population of St. Petersburg was made up of soldiers, sailors, residents of Russian and Finnish villages, the so-called “working people”.
