The Reformation Wall is located within the grounds of the University of Geneva, which was founded by the influential theologian John Calvin. The monument was built to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Calvin's birth and the 350th anniversary of the university's establishment. It is built into the old city walls, symbolizing the integral importance of the fortifications and the city itself to the Reformation.
