The temple was built in the 14th century, during the Malla dynasty. The temple dates back to 1585, and it was rebuilt after the 1934 earthquake and again renovated after the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Priest Abhaya Raj of Patan, a member of the Oku Bahal monastery, of which the Mahabouddha is currently a branch, started its construction.
