• The awe-inducing island of Skellig Michael, a World Heritage Site, lies some 12km (8 miles) off the coast of Bolus Head in County Kerry.
  • Whilst the smaller of the two islands is home to one of the world’s largest gannet colonies, the larger, Skellig Michael, is famous for its 7th century monk settlement.
  • In fact, only 180 people per day are allowed to step foot onto the island. Also, there are just a handful of boats that make the journey out to Skellig Michael.

  • More recently, Skellig Michael was used as a location for shooting two Star Wars movies. Little Skellig is the other main island in the group.

  • Getting to Skellig Michael is half the fun. Sometimes if you do manage to get to the island, the surging seas put a stop to any chance of making a landing.
