The Middle East is a region located in western Asia and north Africa. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the west, the Red Sea to the southwest, the Gulf of Aden to the south, the Persian Gulf to the northeast, and the Caspian Sea to the east. The region covers an area of approximately 5.2 million square miles (13.7 million km²) and has a population of around 400 million people.
