• The Roman Empire was founded in 27 BCE. It was the first Roman emperor, Augustus, who was responsible for the establishment of the empire after defeating Marc Antony at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. This brought an end to the Roman Republic which had existed for 482 years, from 509 to 27 BCE. The Roman Empire would continue to expand for the next two centuries; experiencing incredible wealth whilst facing very few military defeats.
