Treacle tart is a sweet pastry consisting of a buttery shortcrust base and a gooey filling made from treacle (aka golden syrup), breadcrumbs and lemon zest.
The first mention of a treacle tart recipe dates back to a 19th century cookbook by English author Mary Jewry. Since that original recipe treacle tart has commonly included the added ingredients of cream and eggs to create a softer, more luxurious filling.
