Favela funk is a type of Brazilian dance music that emerged in the country’s urban slums, or favelas, in the 1970s. The genre is characterized by its heavy use of percussion and melodies borrowed from other genres, such as samba and salsa. Favela funk is often associated with crime and violence due to its popularity in poor, inner-city neighborhoods.
