- The clock was built in 1903 in honour of Joseph Chamberlain, MP for the area in the late 1900s and one of its most respected figures.
- The clock was unveiled during Chamberlain's lifetime, in January 1904[1] by Mary Crowninshield Endicott, Joseph Chamberlain's third wife.[2].
