The Orkney Islands are an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, situated off the north coast of the mainland. This cluster of islands is composed of around 70 islands, collectively with an area of 990 square kilometres. Only 20 of those islands are inhabited by about 22,400 people as of 2021. The largest of the Orkney Islands is Mainland Orkney, with an area of 523 square kilometres.
