The two tall and slender red Rostral columns on the spit of Vasilievsky Island are an obvious sight anywhere along the Palace Embankment of the Neva River. They were placed at this site in the mid-1700’s to mark the St. Petersburg port entrance, the port docks, and the Customs House.
