Dal became interested in folklore when he was a child. Actually, Vladimir wrote down his first word for the future Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language when he was very young, on the way to the Naval Cadet School. Whatever he did later, he kept up his hobby — collecting unique samples of the wealth of folk language.
