Construction was completed in 1805 on the birthday of Emperor Alexander I and so the church was dedicated to St Mary in honour of his mother. The church was closed in 1940 and only re-consecrated as a Lutheran church in 2002. Today the church serves as the main church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria.
