Cabanel, Montpellier'de dünyaya geldi. Tarihi, klasik ve dini konularda akademik stilde tablolar yaptı. Ayrıca, portre ressamı olarak ünlendi.
Diccionario Enciclopedico Salvat'a göre L'art pompier'in en önemli temsilcisi ve III. Napolyon'un favori ressamıydı.
