Battle of the Frontiers, (4 August–6 September 1914), collective name for the first great clashes on the Western Front of World War I. It encompasses the initial battles fought along the eastern frontier of France and in southern Belgium shortly after the beginning of the war that resulted in a series of stunning German victories and Allied retreats.
