Boris Dittrich Utrecht'te büyüdü ve Leiden Üniversitesi'nde hukuk eğitimi gördü.
1994'ten 2006'ya kadar Dittrich, sosyal-liberal parti D66’yı temsilen milletvekili olarak görev yaptı. 2003'te de D66’da parti başkanlığına yükseldi.
Dittrich, kuruluş yılı 1838’den bu yana en üretken meclis üyelerinden birisi oldu. Kendisi, nihayetinde yasalaştırılmış olan toplam dört adet tasarı hazırlayan ilk meclis üyesidir.
Dittrich, birçok farklı alanda LGBT bireylerine karşı ayrımcılıkları önlemek ve eşit haklar kazanımı üzerine çalışmaktadır.
