Carrickfergus, Irish Carraig Fhearghais, town and former district (1973–2015) within the former County Antrim, now in Mid and East Antrim district, Northern Ireland, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough (inlet of the sea). The name, meaning “rock of Fergus, ” commemorates King Fergus, who was shipwrecked off the coast about 320 ce.
