The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was first established in 1854, shortly after the founding of Sacramento as the capital of California. The cathedral’s original building was a small adobe structure that served as a place of worship for Sacramento’s Catholic community.

Over the years, the cathedral underwent several expansions and renovations, and in 1889, the current cathedral building was constructed.
