Indiana Üniversitesi ve Yale Üniversitesi'nde eğitim gördü. 1951'de başladığı oyunculuk kariyerini 2020 yılına kadar sürdürdü. En çok TV sunucusu Jim Dial rolünde olduğu Murphy Brown adlı komedi TV dizisiyle akıllarda kalmıştır.
