David Mitchell 1969'da İngiltere'de Southport'ta doğdu. İngiliz ve Amerikan Dili Edebiyatı eğitimi gördü. Sicilya'da bir yıl yaşadıktan sonra sekiz yıl boyunca Hiroşima'da İngilizce öğretmenliği yaptı.
