Franz West (1947-2012) was an Austrian artist, whose work involved abstract sculpture, furniture and collage. He studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1977 to 1982, imbuing his work with a practical vigour. His work has been surveyed the world over, including at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, Philadelphia Museum of Art, LACMA, Fondation Beyeler, Basel.
